Vacationers looking for the mundane and predictable will want to skip Albuquerque. Boasting a number of attractions that can't be found anywhere else, this funky high-desert outpost is home to all things unique, exciting and never boring.

Bordered by the majestic Sandia Mountains to the east and a string of dormant volcanoes to the west, Albuquerque's geography is breathtakingly original. The mountains are the perfect spot for hiking, biking and - in the winter - skiing and snowboarding. And those interested in gaining a little altitude can ride the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway - the longest in the world - to the peak's 10,350-foot summit.

At Petroglyph National Monument, visitors can get a closer look at the volcanic remains bordering the town and also check out the more than 20,000 images early Native Americans carved into rocks near the park. Those craving even more history can pay a visit to Albuquerque's Old Town, built as the town's original plaza in the 1700s. And a large stretch of Route 66 runs through the city, surrounded by classic neon signs.

Not enough unique attractions yet? Try Albuquerque's International Balloon Museum, the largest museum dedicated to hot air balloons, or take an actual hot air balloon ride with one of the town's more than 300 resident balloonists. Vacationers lucky enough to visit in October can help celebrate the town's International Balloon Fiesta, the world's largest annual hot air balloon festival.

And when vacationers finish a long day of sightseeing, they can explore Albuquerque's dozens of art galleries, relax at a local spa or golf course, shop in one of the town's many boutiques or just sit back and enjoy some authentic New Mexican-style food.

Whatever vacationers choose to do, Albuquerque offers a lot of exciting options - and none of them involve boredom.
